How the Program Works:

  • Program length is 4 months per level (16 classes). Most students only need 1-3 levels to achieve tremendous gains in writing skill. Sign up for a free writing assessment (the form is below) to find out your child's level and to get an in-depth analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of their writing.
  • Students attend a weekly online class. They learn the fundamentals of grammar, complex sentence structure, paragraph development, and essay composition.
  • Students receive 3 writing assignments per class. These assignments focus on complex sentences, precise descriptive writing, and paragraph/essay development. Students complete these assignments between classes and receive detailed, colour-coded feedback the next morning. Teacher feedback and support are provided 7 days per week.
  • After students receive feedback, they revise their writing for additional rounds of feedback, corrections, and follow-up exercises to address skill gaps. There is no limit to revisions and feedback is provided 7 days per week.

Lessons Also Incorporate:

  • "Visible" writing: Most student writing is vague and abstract. Students learn how to add specific details and vivid descriptions to make their writing come to life.
  • Intellectual and vocabulary development: Course content includes social science, history, STEM, and Harvard bookshelf readings. Vocabulary development based on these texts is built into the course.
  • Critical and creative thinking: Powerful thinking tools including integrative and lateral thinking help students see problems in new ways and generate unique ideas.
  • Memory and learning skills: Students increase vocabulary and improve memory and learning skills. The techniques are easy and fun, can be applied immediately in every class, and massively raise kids' confidence in their learning skills.

Detailed Class Information:

The program includes a weekly online class and 3 weekly writing assignments with revisions. These assignments reinforce what was taught during class and provide more high-level personalized writing coaching than any other online or in-person writing program. That's why our students see significant results after only a short period of training.

After students submit their writing through the course website (which keeps student work and teacher feedback perfectly organized), the teacher reviews it, identifies problem areas, gives colour-coded descriptive feedback, and assigns grades to track progress throughout the course. Because students are receiving feedback throughout the week, the lessons stay top-of-mind and students quickly learn how to write well.

Students then revise their work and the teacher re-checks it, correcting errors and providing explanations for changes as well as follow-up exercises that target problem areas. These issues are tracked across assignments and reviewed continuously until each issue is resolved.

Assignment Focus:

  1. The first writing assignment focuses on grammar and complex sentences. Students combine simple sentences into complex sentences using the forms taught in class (these forms are taught cumulatively until 23 complex sentence types are mastered). Additional short assignments are often provided to address specific grammar problems. These are individualized for each student.
  2. The second assignment focuses on a) summarizing and paraphrasing and b) accurate descriptions of graphs and diagrams. Students summarize article excerpts and accurately describe data, processes, and diagrams. These ideas will be incorporated into their long form writing assignment. 
  3. The third assignment is an essay or report. Students develop an essay/report over 2 weeks, which incorporates class discussions, short readings, and content from assignment #2. The teacher provides feedback throughout the brainstorming, outline, and draft stages.

Course Levels and Program Admission:

The goal of the program is to help students master academic writing as quickly as possible. The complete program has 5 levels, but most students only need 1-3 levels to become excellent writers. In fact, many high school students will see a complete transformation in their writing skills after 1 level.

Levels I & II - Accelerated Learning: This program meets students at their current level and brings them up to standard. The focus is on getting students used to the writing process, resolving fundamental grammar issues (run-on sentences, sentence fragments, verb tense issues, subject-verb agreement, punctuation), understanding sentence structure foundations, and mastering essential concepts in paragraph writing.

Students also focus on detailed, descriptive writing. Most student writing is "thin": it tends to be weakly developed and lack detail. Students learn how to identify gaps in their explanations and add details to make their writing come to life. They also learn how to research to support their ideas and how to summarize without plagiarism.

Level III - Intermediate Training: Students continue to develop their descriptive and persuasive writing skills as well as an extensive repertoire of complex sentence types. Students also learn to use a variety of reliable, academic sources to bolster their writing with real-world information and data, and how to accurately summarize it without plagiarism.

Level IV & V - Advanced Training: In Levels IV and V, we complete the sentence structure system. Students apply all grammar and sentence structure forms with the goal of attaining grammar mastery. 

Essays are explored in depth. This program offers an intellectual challenge for students as they learn the core principles of argumentation and how these are applied in developing an essay.

I appreciate all your corrections and tips. It made a huge difference to notice that [not enough] “error-free” sentences were pushing my score down. I tried to control those errors during my last test, and it seems everything went well! 

I just wrote the texts in a simple way instead of using complex structures to give a good impression. I also paid more attention to subject / verb and tenses, avoiding those basic single/plural errors. I didn’t have time to read and correct my texts at the end (like always), but I believe that I controlled my errors during the writing process. 

Thanks again for all the lessons and tips, it made a huge difference to notice that one of my biggest problems in writing was the error-free sentences.
