Academic Writing Masterclass gives kids the edge in communication skills to excel in school and advance in their careers
Proven system transforms students in grades 5-10 into advanced writers who get higher marks in all subjects.
Put your child on the fast track to academic and professional success. Results are guaranteed.
School doesn't provide enough support for students to reach their full potential in writing.
- Writing improvement requires 30 minutes of dedicated practice per day (minimum!), but many students hardly write at all. Most classes do not have a dedicated writing period, and parents often report that their child writes ONE paragraph per month.
- Students rarely get meaningful feedback, just checkmarks and "great work!" weeks after submitting work.
- Many teachers NEVER teach grammar, even when grammar issues are a student's biggest problem. Recently, a grade 11 student told me that in three years of high school, they had talked about grammar for half of one period IN TOTAL, despite repeated requests for grammar instruction.
73% of employers are looking for strong writing skills...
"If you are trying to decide among a few people to fill a position, hire the best writer. [His/her] writing skills will pay off. That's because being a good writer is about more than writing clear writing. Clear writing is a sign of clear thinking. Great writers know how to communicate. They make things easy to understand. They can put themselves in someone else's shoes. They know what to omit. And those are qualities you want in any candidate. Writing is making a comeback all over our society...Writing is today's currency for good ideas..."
- Source: Jason Fried, founder of Basecamp
...but our education system delivers brutal results:
Only 23% of Canadian professors think students “are able to write at a university level.”
A survey of 1300 professors at York University, University of Waterloo, Western University, and the University of Toronto revealed:
- 41% of students are "at risk" of not being able to do well in their university studies.
- 16% are classified as "dysfunctional," which means completely incapable of succeeding in their studies.
- Only 32% of professors think students “have adequate academic skills.”
- Only 23% of professors think students “are able to write at a university level.”

Why aren't students learning in school?
Students need a MINIMUM of 30 minutes of writing practice PER DAY.
70% of students don't get enough writing practice. According to research, “only about 25% of middle-schoolers and 31% of high school students practice writing 30 minutes a day.” Curriculum experts say students should be writing AT LEAST 30 minutes per day, and principals who truly care about the quality of students' education require 60 minutes per day.
However, nearly every parent who contacts AEM Academy reports that their child rarely writes in school, feedback is provided weeks or months later, the feedback is useless, and the teacher is unwilling or unable to provide sufficient writing support.
Perhaps it's not surprising that only one quarter of students can write properly.

Many teachers don't bother providing effective assignments or detailed feedback. It's too much work.
Unlike private teachers, public teachers are not inspected by the Ministry of Education, so many don't bother following its content or assessment requirements. Instead, they do this: pointless freewriting tasks followed by useless feedback.
Source: TDSB parent, 2023
Many teachers don't know grammar. They focus on content because they can't teach formal writing skills.
In Teacher's College at the University of Toronto, out of 35 prospective teachers, only 2 of us knew the rules of grammar. No one else was interested in learning them, including the professors.
One professor said, "If I see my students struggling with writing, I know I should stop teaching the content and focus on writing, but the problem is, I don't know how."

Instead, we have the ILLUSION of success.
A brief history of grade inflation in Ontario:
According to research by Cote and Allahar:
- Until the 1960s, no more than 5% of students earned an "A" average. 30% received a "B." The norm was "C."
- 1967: Standardized exams were eliminated.
- 1983: 38% of students admitted to university had an average of 80+%.
- 1992: 44% of students admitted to university had an average of 80+%.
- 1995: 53% of students admitted to university had an average of 80+%. 9.4% had an A+ average.
- 2004: 61% of students admitted to university had an average of 80+%. 14.9% had an A+ average.
- Since 2007, 90% of students in Ontario have a "B" average or higher.
What's worse is that grade inflation conceals HUGE gaps in writing skills, which can jeopardize a child's future.
Inflated grades set up students for grade shock when they get to university, which can demotivate and discourage them, and have a devastating impact on their dreams. Find out what's REALLY going on with your child's writing before it's too late.
According to research, when students get to university:
- Only 2.5% earn higher grades.
- About 25% maintain the same grades as in high school.
- Nearly 50% drop an entire letter grade.
- Nearly 25% drop TWO letter grades or more, and most of these students don't complete university.

This is a diagnostic assessment of a Winnipeg student's writing. She received 93% in English but didn't know how to use a comma, how to fix a run-on sentence, or how to match a pronoun to its antecedent. These are basic writing problems that even her parents noticed. However, during every parent-teacher interview, the teacher praised this student's writing and told the parents they had nothing to worry about.
Good thing the parents didn't trust the teacher!
Even high-achieving students have ENORMOUS room for improvement, but they advance quickly with direct instruction and focused training.
Students who get 70s or 80s can easily get 90s. Dramatic improvements in idea development, organization, grammatical accuracy, and sentence structure variety are readily achieved with focused instruction and detailed feedback.
I am excited to tell you that I got 94% in grade 10 English. I just received the marks and I want to thank you for teaching me English and helping me improve.
Risari J. from Mississauga jumped from 80s to 90s after fixing several minor but persistent grammar issues, improving idea development, and learning a wider variety of sentence structures.

Results come from focus on timeless fundamentals: the four pillars of academic writing excellence.
When students develop core writing skills, grades rise on all assignments.
In fact, even our ESL students often get higher marks on ENGLISH ASSIGNMENTS than their native English speaker peers, and they get into the post-secondary programs they want.
Jan Waginski
Program director & head teacher
1. Grammar mastery
Grades increase on EVERY assignment when students avoid run-ons, fragments, and subject-verb agreement errors.
2. Complex sentences mastery
Students learn over 20 commonly used sentence structures and how to assemble them like Legos. Reading speed and comprehension also improve when students finally see how ideas in long sentences are connected.
3. Essay & Report structures
Students master detailed paragraph, report, and essay frameworks that remove all guesswork about how to structure and develop ideas. Reading speed and comprehension also benefit when students understand how texts are structured, which makes it easy to find information and score higher on comprehension tasks.
4. Writing workflows
Students follow a process-based approach to writing that ALWAYS leads to better results: Analyze, Brainstorm, Chunk - Check - Chuck, Develop, Edit.
How the program works:
Our unique training system, which is impossible to deliver in a traditional school or tutoring setting, gives students the practice and support to quickly progress from intermediate to advanced writing skills.
Students only get better at writing when they 1) write regularly, 2) receive prompt & detailed feedback, and 3) revise problem areas.
Weekly writing exercises build transferrable skills.
Every weekly class includes three writing assignments that students complete and submit during the week through a user-friendly interface. These highly effective skill building exercises focus on 1) grammar and complex sentences, 2) precise descriptive writing, and 3) paragraph and essay development.
Timely & detailed feedback keeps learning top-of-mind.
Students receive their feedback the next day before 8 AM. This keeps writing concepts top-of-mind.
Detailed comments are colour-coded by error type:
- Content issues (development, detail, and clarity)
- Cohesion issues (organization of ideas, use of transitions)
- Word choice (accuracy and precision)
- Grammar (accuracy and sentence structure range)
Writing is a process that requires revisions.
If students don't DO anything with teacher feedback, they forget it almost immediately. After receiving feedback, students in our program revise their work for additional feedback and corrections. There is no limit to the number of revisions students can complete, and teacher support is available 7 days/week.
The AEM program is built around maximizing the amount of writing that students do because this is the ONLY way students can improve quickly. It is impossible to deliver this level of training in a traditional classroom or tutoring setting.

You can share an assignment that was completed for school, but it is more accurate to see what your child can produce without any help. I am extremely happy to share with you my IELTS result (attached). I got the scores that I needed, and it would not have been possible without your guidances.
I was skeptical about my writing test, as I could finish two essays critical timely. I did not get time to read again, and as you know I do lot of typing errors and simple grammars which could be caught only during revision. But it worked.
I would like to express gratitude for your devotion and hard work, helping students for their career.

I scored 7.5 in writing this time, which is quite amazing compared to my previous score of 6.5. I followed the TREES pattern you suggested and wrote in the simplest manner I could. Also, I believe the one on one feedback session was very helpful in clearing all my queries. I would suggest to never abandon this approach.
Thank you again for all your input.

WRITING BAND 7.5
Just got my results. They are what I was hoping for!
Q. What helped you the most from our one session together?
A. From our session, the most useful part was to hear you explain the format, and to compare it to all the different types of essays. It was also extremely useful to have you go over my essays scoring them according to the score guide. This gave some key points to focus on.

I'm delighted to tell you that I got the marks I need in the last IELTS exam. I’m sure that I achieved these bands because of your tremendous effort and help… Before I joined the course my English language was not good especially in writing, and my highest result in IELTS exam was 5.5 in writing. I heard about the course from a friend, so I enrolled in it, and from the first session I understood that this course is better than other courses that I attended before. This is because the teacher, Mr. Jan, has a very good command of English. He delivers the information to students in a very nice way, and his sessions are full with important details like grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. His platform is highly informative and contain all the materials that are required to improve your English particularly speaking and writing. For instance, the vocabulary app was very beneficial to increase my vocab. Additionally, Mr. Jan was professional in correcting my essays and I learned a lot from him. I highly recommend this course for everyone who wants to improve his or her English or to get good marks in IELTS exam.
I want to thank you for your continuous support and advice.

OVERALL BAND 8 | Reading 8.5, Listening 8.5, Writing 7, Speaking 8
I would like to thank you for all the support you gave to me. I finally reached band 7!
I appreciate all your corrections and tips. It made a huge difference to notice that [not enough] “error-free” sentences were pushing my score down. I tried to control those errors during my last test, and it seems everything went well!
I just wrote the texts in a simple way instead of using complex structures to give a good impression. I also paid more attention to subject / verb and tenses, avoiding those basic single/plural errors. I didn’t have time to read and correct my texts at the end (like always), but I believe that I controlled my errors during the writing process.
Thanks again for all the lessons and tips, it made a huge difference to notice that one of my biggest problems in writing was the error-free sentences.

I asked Jan for help with my IELTS exam preparation because high score was extremely important for my immigration process. Jan’s approach is very different from what I’ve seen before. Jan pays a lot of attention to details and accurately identifies the systematic mistakes. For each of them Jan has a respective course with both theoretical part and practical assignments. With Jan’s course I boosted my Writing from 6.0 to 7.0 in 5 weeks! I strongly recommend you take Jan’s course to prepare for IELTS exam properly and to get the highest score!

OVERALL BAND 8 | Reading 8.5, Listening 9, Writing 7, Speaking 7
Jan helped me to get from Band 5.5 to Band 7.5 in writing. His class was very helpful because not only does he provide very detailed feedback, but we rewrite our work and he checks it again and provides more feedback. This gives me a chance to try to fix my mistakes by myself, and to see if I really understand my problems. We would then go over the problems I really don’t understand in detail. As well, we spend a lot of time on complex sentences and grammar, which has helped me feel much more confident when I write and when I speak. Thanks to Mr. Jan’s efforts, I finally got Band 7.5 in writing.
